Due to COVID-19 related considerations, this club dive event will not happen in 2020. I have left the page on our website so that you can see what we normally do, and I hope that we will once again be able to run trips like this in 2021.

NYC Sea Gypsies

7 nights at the highly-rated Little Cayman Beach Resort: Nov. 14 – 22, 2020

Warm-water divers rejoice! The NYC Sea Gypsies are taking an international group trip to the world-renowned island of Little Cayman—an area often called the best diving in the Caribbean with pristine coral reefs untouched by cruise ships & crowds.

10 lucky divers can take advantage of the INCREDIBLE SAVINGS the club secured just for this group trip with everything included except for airfare & dive tips!

The Diving: AM/PM Boat Dives Included

With 100-foot visibility & 82F water temps, the long leisurely dives in Little Cayman are a dream. This marine park is widely considered to offer the Caribbean's best diving with its crystal-clear waters & marine diversity. Majestic rays, friendly grouper, turtles unafraid of divers, octopus, frog fish, seahorses, & the occasional shark populate these gorgeous seascapes comprised of lush coral gardens, giant sponges, & elaborate sea fans. With year-round perfect diving conditions, nearly non-existent currents, & personalized valet service, Little Cayman offers the most amazing, effortless diving.

Divers will especially delight in the famed Bloody Bay Wall. Named for numerous pirate battles, the wall rises to within 20 feet of the surface & plunges down vertically to more than 1,000. While this impressive expanse would be enough to attract divers, the coral here is even more wondrous. Most corals are fluorescent (i.e., they light up under an external source of light such as a black light). Some corals are bioluminescent instead, meaning they light up by themselves. Bloody Bay corals are both fluorescent & bioluminescent making this wall one of the most colorful & otherworldly dives in the world!

Divers will also be taken for a morning trip to the sister island of Cayman Brac. There, we’ll dive on two sites including the only diveable Soviet-built warship in the Western hemisphere.

Included in this trip are 17 boat dives beginning the morning after your arrival. The week will continue with 3 dives a day—2 in the morning & 1 in the afternoon—until the day before your departure which will include only morning dives to match most flight times the following day.
The boats at Little Cayman Beach Resort are roomy & divers will have a choice of diving alone with their buddy or following the DM. In addition, the dive shop offers personalized valet diving handling the heavy lifting & care of your dive gear (unless you’d prefer to do it yourself). They’ll rinse, dry, & store your gear so everything’s set up & ready for your next day’s diving.

Intrepid/advanced divers can also add on some shore diving, however, both a dive flag & a car are required.

This is the diving for those who want to get away from it all to just relax & dive in gloriously warm water! Perfect for either beginners or advanced divers.

The Resort

Little Cayman Beach Resort is a gem designed with divers in mind on an island with very little development—an intimate Caribbean oasis that captures the essence of the laidback vibe. The resort was recently renovated resulting in modern facilities in a boutique setting along the oceanfront with stunning blue water just steps away.

The service is top notch & the resort is highly rated with:
• 4.5 stars on Trip Advisor
• 5 stars on Facebook
• 4.7 rating on Google
• Tons of praise on Scubaboard
• Personal recommendations from club members

Food: All Meals Included

A new chef took over last year creating even more delicious meals. These chef-prepared dishes are served buffet-style. In accordance with most flight times, the meal plan begins with dinner on your arrival day & ends with breakfast on your departure day.

Breakfast: Homemade granola, breads, pastries, fruit, yogurt, & hot entrées often accompanied by an omelet station. Eggs benedict is a favorite.

Lunch: A daily soup & salad selection, meats, cheeses, breads, condiments for sandwiches, hot entrées, & light desserts.

Dinner: A different theme every evening with delicious soups, appetizers, salads, freshly sautéed vegetables, side dishes, & several hot entrées. Most nights also feature a specialty carving station. The freshly carved roast beef & grilled mahi-mahi are often favorites as well as the barbecue. There’s also always a selection of fabulous desserts. Note: The resort can cater to special dietary needs with advanced notice.

Drinks

Coffee, tea, iced tea, milk, & fruit punch are complimentary along with fruit juices offered at breakfast. A wide variety of beverages are also available for purchase including sodas, smoothies, milkshakes, juices, local craft beers, imported beer, red & white wines, champagne, & signature cocktails.

The Weather

The most pleasant weather is from mid-November to April when there’s little rain, brilliant sunshine, & a constant cool sea breeze. Hurricane season slightly overlaps with this timeframe ending on Nov. 30. However, the Dow Jones Island Index ranked the Cayman Islands as the 3rd least likely island in the Caribbean to be hit by a hurricane & the 7th least likely island in the entire world!
The average high in November is 86°F during the day with a low of 77°F at night. We’re avoiding the muggiest months as well as the mosquito season. It can be windier in November which is why some divers choose to visit during the summer instead, however, the dive boat can motor to the other side of the island where it’s more sheltered. Nothing is ever guaranteed, but Nov. 14-22 is generally considered a good time to visit.

Flights

There is no direct flight & flights to/from the island operate only during daylight hours. While airfare is not included in the price, the trip organizer will be tracking flight prices on multiple apps to see what kind of deals she can snag & then will share her itinerary.

Notes

• You must be a club member in order to join this trip. Club membership is just $20/year & includes a number of perks.
• You must also have a 2020 liability waiver & a copy of your dive certification card on file with the club.
• The NYC Sea Gypsies does not vet divers. We’re not in a position to decide about the suitability of any dive for any diver. It’s your responsibility to decide whether you have the training & experience for any particular dive.
• The pricing included is based upon 9 participants & the organizer. If, for the highly unlikely reason that 9 people don’t sign up in our club of 325+ members, then you would have the option to pay a higher price or cancel your trip for a full refund.
• The pricing is also based upon a double occupancy room. However, you don’t need to know someone to sign up. You’ll be paired with another club member by the organizer. If you’ll be signing up with a friend/significant other, you can request that you room together.
• Tanks, weights, weight belts, & dive computers are provided.
• No refunds, however, you’ll be able to re-sell your spot in advance. This is periodically done by members.
• As with all international trips, we recommend you purchase both trip cancellation & interruption insurance. We also favor dive insurance from the Divers Alert Network.

Payments can be made by check, Venmo (@NYCSeaGypsies), or by using your own bank’s app via Zelle/Quick Pay (to treasurer@seagypsies.nyc). PayPal is also available upon request.
